Review: Misser - Every Day I Tell Myself I’m Going To Be a Better Person

Review by Troy Sennett
“Side Projects Are Never Successful,” according Jeff Rosenstock, proprietor of a fairly successful (former) side project called Bomb the Music Industry! For the most part, he’s right. With a few exceptions (Elsie by the Horrible Crowes and I Can Make a Mess Like Nobody’s Business come to mind), side projects often seem to do little more for an artist’s fan base than incite a collective call to get the band back together. That’s not a sentiment Misser is likely to encounter while promoting Every Day I Tell Myself I’m Going To Be a Better Person, however. The duo consists of pop punk veterans (Tim Landers of Transit and Brad Wiseman of This Time Next year), and their scrappy debut record is certain to impress both their longtime fans and those who would never touch an album called Drop Out of Life.
Landers is the driving force behind the majority of Every Day. His guitar playing runs circles around most of his peers, and he shows it time and time again, from the noodly, Algernon Cadwallader-esque licks in “Time Capsules” and “She Didn’t Turn Out To Be That Cool” to the straightforward rock of “Bridges.” His vocals, on the other hand, are not as outright impressive. His voice is distinct and his delivery passionate, but it has a grating, forced quality to it that sometimes makes listening to the record straight through feel like a chore. Unfortunately, Wiseman’s voice has the same qualities, so it does little to balance the sound out. Regardless, they do the Tell All Your Friends-style line trading exceptionally well, and the solid songwriting (“The Waits” is a particular standout in that category) ensures that nearly every track stands quite well on its own.
It’s unclear how often we can expect Misser to release new music, but a solid debut means Landers and Wiseman can rest assured that people will be excited when they do.
SCORE: 7.5/10
